The Beat Cancer Page FAQ
Who are you?My name is Bruce Mackey. My wife and I have had our own personal struggles with cancer and we have known many others, both family and friends, who have been affected. I am one of the fortunate survivors, but we know that many others have not survived.
I had my first bout with cancer at age 18 when I developed a Lymphoma called Hodgkin's Disease. I was just starting college and had to take a break to deal with the chemotherapy and radiation treatments which followed the next six months. I survived, had my hair grow back, and life went on: finishing college, getting married and starting a family.
But sixteen years after those radiation treatments I developed a large sarcoma called a "peripheral nerve sheath tumor" in my upper left arm. After nine long months of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy, I was followed closely by doctors for the next five critical years while praying that a recurrence would NOT appear. I am happy to say that I now have been without cancer for more than nine years.
I’m sure you can imagine the shock my young family and I felt when we learned of the sarcoma. However, in March of 2005 we were again to feel the devastation that comes with a cancer diagnosis when my wife was found to have Breast Cancer. While she undergoes treatment, we’ll raise our two boys together and pray that modern medicine will come up with a cure for cancer soon – not only for us but for the millions of people suffering with this disease every day.
Why are you doing this?Since our family has been so affected by cancer, we’ve decided that something needs to be done to help raise awareness for people who face this disease. I came upon the idea of raising money for Cancer research as a way to help others dealing with cancer one day while playing with our boys. If a cure is found in my lifetime then perhaps my children will not have to face losing either of their parents, or worse, face a personal fight with cancer. When I later heard about the famous "million dollar home page" that Alex Tew put up I realized this was what I had been looking for.
This page hopefully will help in two ways. First by raising money that will be given to cancer research organizations, and second by honoring those that are fighting with cancer, those who have survived, and those who have lost their battle.
What are you going to do with the money? We will be donating all of the net proceeds received from this website to different cancer organizations. The following is a partial list of some of the charities we hope to support:
American Association for Cancer Research
American Brain Tumor Association
American Cancer Society
American Institute for Cancer Research
American Lung Association
Brain Tumor Society
Breast Cancer Research Foundation
Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation
Cancer Treatment Research Foundation
Children’s Cancer Research Fund
Colon Cancer Alliance
Cycle of Hope
National Childhood Cancer Foundation
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition
National Coalition for Cancer Research
Prostate Cancer Foundation
Skin Cancer Foundation
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Each month we will post which organizations have received donations in our Blog.
Why should I buy your pixels? You should buy my pixels to show your support for those personally fighting cancer, to support cancer research, and to honor people you know who have been affected by cancer. Let’s help to find a cure for cancer in our lifetime.
You will have an image and a link to any site of your choosing which could potentially be seen by millions of people over the coming years. When the cursor is over your image, a message of your choosing will also display. This Beat Cancer Page will be online for at least 10 years, but the hope is to keep it online forever.
We suggest that people use this to link to their personal pages with tributes to those who have fought or are now fighting cancer.
Why can't I buy one single pixel?Like other pixel pages, we decided that anything smaller than 10x10 block isn't easily seen or clicked, so the minimum size ensures that all supporters can be seen. Remember, you can also buy as many 10 x 10 blocks that you would like for maximum exposure.
How long will the site be online? The site will be online for ten years guaranteed (at least until January 4, 2016), however the aim is to keep the site online forever (or as long as humanly possible).
The idea is to create something of an Internet time capsule: a homepage that is a permanent support to those with cancer and as a memorial to those that lost their battle with this disease.
I have a big picture but only bought a small space, is that OK?Yes, your picture will automatically be resized to fit into the fields you purchase.
